Olympics invite for Island's swim duo

Bermuda pair Keira Aitken and Roy Allan Burch will represent Bermuda at this year's Olympic Games after the international swimming invited the pair to take part.

Burch will represent Bermuda in either the 50-metre or 100m freestyle, while Aitken will swin in the 100m backstroke.

The news topped off a perfect week for Burch who set two new Bermuda records while swimming at the Rego Sotheby's National Swimming Championships at the Saltus pool last weekend.

On Saturday night, Burch won the 100 metres freestyle race in convincing fashion in 51.71 seconds, clipping two tenths of a second off the previous record, held by Ronald Cowen.

This was a sign of things to come as on Sunday night he pulled out all the stops in the 50 metres freestyle, his favourite event, and the one in which he will be representing Bermuda in Beijing.

Leading the race from the outset with a superb display of speed, he powered home to a convincing victory with a time of 23.03 seconds, smashing his own previous record by half a second.

Burch now heads back to his training base in the United States Monday well satisfied with his performance over the weekend and bearing the best wishes of his local supporters for an equivalent swim in Beijing.

With the Rego championships complete, the high point champions of the meet were Lara Loescher and Jason Mastalir.

Loescher hit the top of the podium with four victories in the 50 metres butterfly, –50 metres breaststroke, –100 metres freestyle and 200 metres individual medley and finished second in the –50 metres backstroke and –50 metres freestyle events.

Mastalir won his trophy in even more convincing fashion as he won the 200, 400 and 1,500 metres freestyle events and swept all three of the backstroke disciplines.

A number of age group records were also set ¿ Rebecca Heyliger, as she won the women's 50 metres freestyle, Ashley Yearwood in winning the women's –200 metres butterfly and Rebecca Sharpe, with her victories in the 50 and 100 metres backstroke.

With the current form of local swimmers peaking at the right time, things seem to be on the up just in time for the upcoming second FINA World Youth Championships to be held next month in Monterrey, Mexico as all three new record holders will be there to represent Bermuda.

A second group of swimmers will be heading out at the same time for the Alberta Provincial Championships, as Bermuda swimming enters the climax of its season with these overseas trips.
