Gov't looks peer pressure, education

cooperate with the new once-week-only garbage collection service, Works Minister the Hon. Clarence Terceira said yesterday.

Dr. Terceira said he would rather rely on education and peer pressure to encourage people to comply with the scheme and put their trash out on the right day.

The Minister was responding to complaints from a Berkeley Road, Pembroke resident that neighbours were trashing her street.

The woman, who did not want her name disclosed, claimed the residents of a nearby apartment building were putting trash on the roadside nearly every day.

"It's disgusting.'' she said. "The pick-up day for the neighbourhood is Monday, but they are putting out eight to ten bags of garbage nearly every day of the week.'' The woman said she had not reported the offenders to Police because she did not want to make enemies with her neighbours.

She added the problem had gotten more noticeable since the slashed service.

But, her neighbours had been defying the law even before it was put into effect.

Dr. Terceira pointed out there was an anonymous hotline for people in her situation to call -- 297-7946.

He added that anyone with bulky waste could call 292-7454 and have it collected at any time during the year.

Dr. Terceira said he did not think there was a major problem with people putting trash out on the wrong days.

In fact, he said Bermuda looked tidier with the new scheme because it was more regular and on-time than the previous twice-a-week pick-ups.
