Sims' super 66 takes him back on Tour
Just 12 hours after arriving in Hershey, Pennsylvania, Michael Sims produced a five-under-par 66 on Monday to qualify for his second successive Buy.Com Tour event and his third Tour event since turning professional earlier this year.
The Bermudian rookie, playing the course blind, was among 14 qualifiers who made it through to the Hershey Open, starting tomorrow at the par-71 Country Club of Hershey course.
Two qualifiers shot 65 while Sims and five others shot 66.
"I didn't get a practice round but I have a friend here and before the round yesterday morning he gave me some directions around the place. It was a pretty straightforward golf course so there wasn't anything tricky," said Sims yesterday.
The 23-year-old has hardly had a spare minute in the past week since qualifying for the Knoxville Open in Tennessee last Monday and then making the half-way cut last Friday.
After finishing that tournament on Sunday, he travelled throughout the night to reach his Pennsylvania destination around 3 a.m. on Monday and teed off 12 hours later.
Sims is quietly pleased with the gradual success he has been reaping in recent weeks and is looking forward to being in competition again this week.
"It feels good to qualify again and it takes a bit of the pressure off (that) I've been putting on myself but I've got to go out there and do it again this week," he said.
Having had a see-saw experience in the Knoxville Open which he started promisingly - being three-under-par after two rounds and in a 15-way tie for 30th - before plummeting to a five-over-par 77 on Saturday and finishing with a sub-par 71 on Sunday, he will be hoping for more consistent rounds in Hershey.
The ups and downs of life on the greens and fairways is teaching Sims "to just be patient" as he seeks to build his professional career.
"It helps knowing that other golfers are going through the same thing," he noted, as he headed to the course to practise.
Meanwhile, Knoxville Open winner Darron Stiles is among a field of 156 golfers competing in the Hershey Open. The record on the 7,154-yard course is 63, set by Bob Burns in the 1998 Buy.Com tournament.
