Bermuda crashed to a 3-0 defeat to Barbados on Friday, ending any hope of Davis Cup qualification.

Victory over US Virgin Islands on Thursday at the Costa Rica Tennis Club, in San Jose, Costa Rica, gave Steve Bean's team some hope of making it up to the Americas Zone Group III next year, until the clash with Barbados.

Jenson Bascome, a winner against the Virgin Islanders, went down to Russell Moseley 6-2, 7-6 (3) playing in the number one slot, his 19th Davis Cup defeat.

James Collieson, the number two player in this campaign, was beaten 7-6 (7), 6-3 by Haydn Lewis, his 34th defeat in 51 ties in the international competition.

Bascome and Gavin Manders then went down to Lewis and Moseley 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the redundant third rubber.

Bermuda were scheduled to take on Trinidad and Tobago yesterday in the final day of the competition which has been a reality check for the players after the successes in the Island Games in Gibraltar last month.

Bascome and Manders, along with Island number one Andy Bray and teenager David Thomas, won a silver in the men's competition with Bascome taking gold with Bray in the men's doubles.

The team return home today and will be in action immediately, taking part in the latter stages of the Argus Open this coming week ahead of Saturday's final.

Bray continued his march to the Argus Open final yesterday, celebrating his 29th birthday in style by beating Roger Marshall 6-2, 6-2.

Bray, who is feeling the effects of a virus, is now in the quarter-finals of the event but the imminent return of Collieson, Manders and Bascome should stiffen competition for the later rounds.

Second seed in the Ladies' A singles, Zarah DeSilva, disposed of Melissa Spuling 6-2,6-0, while Sasha Fisher, who won Island Games mixed doubles gold with Bray in Gibraltar last month, also had no problems reaching the next round, taking out Liz Osborne 6-1, 6-3.

Fisher then paired up with sister Kara to upset second seeds in the doubles Gil Butterfield and Jill Finnigan. The sisters have not played locally lately but over the years have won tournaments together in England, Atlanta and Trinidad.

In other matches over the weekend at the WER Joell Tennis Stadium, Aileen Stuart gave Jo Tucker a scare in the first set of their match in the senior ladies' singles. Tucker, back from a tennis elbow injury, managed to find her groove and moved the ball well from side to side to win 7-5, 6-3.

In the Men's B Singles, Frazer Moore took out Chris Smith 6-3,6-2 with some blistering returns of serve that were too much for Smith to handle and the following day disposed of Dan Rutstein 6-3, 7-5 after coming back from 4-1 down in the second and saving a set point at 5-3.

In the Men's senior singles, Earl Leader ousted Jan Jarmula, 6-0, 6-3 with smart, steady play, that was far too much for Jarmula to take.

Jacob Trott had a three-set victory over teenager David Thomas in an epic.

Trott lost the first 4-6 and went up 2-0 in the second but then lost confidence. Both were both playing tight in the second set and kept breaking each other but Trott eventually won that set 7-2 in the tiebreak and looked like victory was in his grasp.

The heat and the length of the match was now in his favour as he felt fresh and saw his partner tiring mentally and physically. He won the third to take the match 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1.

Play continues today at 5 p.m.
