Football fever on the streets

As the Bermuda football team prepares to take on Trinidad and Tobago in a World Cup qualifying game tomorrow, The Royal Gazette took to the streets and found pride and confidence in the boys in red white and blue.

"I think we find ourselves in a good position. We should be able to hold our ground on our own turf," said Raoul Ming.

And Jessie Mills said: "If we can do it once, we can do it again. Bermuda all the way."

Mekisha Hills is hoping for Bermuda to at least manage a draw, but unfortunately she won't be able to watch the game from the stand. "I'm sad I didn't get a ticket," said Ms. Hill. "I know we can do it."

Mike Perinchief predicted a 2-0 win for Bermuda adding: "I think that Bermuda's well seasoned in taking defeats. Now it's time to take the wins we deserve."

Andrew Bailey agreed. "I want Bermuda to win. They deserve it."

"We're going to win, and then we're going to the next round," said Clay Cartwright, who believes Bermuda will take Trinidad 2-1.

Meanwhile, Portugal fan Carlos Falco has only turned to the Bermuda game after his team's painful Euro Cup loss to Germany on Thursday. "It'll probably be a draw," Mr. Falco said.

"I don't know what the strength of the team is," said Tommy Marlin. "If we go in there with the same confidence we did in the last game, we could take it."

Not quite as reserved, another Bermuda supporter said he thought the team would score three goals, if not more, in the first half alone.

In an e-mail sent to The Royal Gazette, former Bermuda resident Natalie Williamson regrets that the game won't be broadcast in Birmingham, England, where she now lives.

"Hey, I'm not a football fan but Bermuda's slowly changing my mind for the better," she wrote.

In another e-mail, L.D. Williams wrote: "Just have faith in yourselves and know that your country is behind you 100 percent. Believe you can do it and you shall."
