Painter becomes first road fatality of 2000
Police are investigating a freak accident in which a St. George's man died after being run over by a taxi while lying on Cut Road.
And in a separate incident a Warwick man is in hospital this morning after he sustained serious injuries in a collision with a car in a separate incident yesterday afternoon.
Described by a friend as a "beautiful, loving person'' Robert Bolin became the first road fatality of the year when he died at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital late yesterday morning.
Doctors had fought for the 56-year-old Cut Road man's life for about 14 hours before he succumbed to his injuries. An autopsy is expected to be performed soon.
A self employed painter, Mr. Bolin was described by friend Kathy Hodson as "the best person in the world'' when she was approached not far from the accident scene.
"Robert was a beautiful, loving person,'' Ms Hodson said. "He was a good friend and brilliant with children. I'm just sorry he had to die.'' A taxi driver told Police he was driving near "Belvedere'' around 10 p.m.
when he happened across an object in the road.
He told investigators he was unsuccessful in avoiding the object only to find out afterwards it was a human being.
Mr. Bolin was taken to the hospital and underwent immediate surgery for internal injuries from which he subsequently died.
A Police spokeswoman said the taxi driver voluntarily went to Hamilton Police Station and will be interviewed in the next few days.
Witnesses and anyone who may be able to account for Mr. Bolin's whereabouts after 9 p.m. on Sunday evening are asked to contact P.c. Frank Dublin at St.
George's Police Station at 297-1122.
Mystery death investigated In the other incident, a 29-year-old man was taken to the hospital after colliding with a Volkswagen car at the junction of Middle Road and the entrance to White's Supermarket.
Police believe he was in the westbound carriageway and the car was travelling east and in the process of turning right at the entrance.
The accident occurred just before 1 p.m. yesterday and only involved the two vehicles, which were both extensively damaged.
A road traffic accident investigator was called to the scene and the road cordoned off.
Last night a hospital spokeswoman said the crash victim was in a stable condition in the hospital's intensive care unit.
Anyone with information about this accident is asked to call P.c. Donville Yarde at 234-1010.
