Shampoo? I don't think I'll need any for a while
The Royal Gazette's Owain Johnston-Barnes is throwing out the shampoo in his house, as he won't be needing it for awhile. He and two friends, Liz Bradshaw and Tawana Tannock, plan to shave their heads for the annual St Baldrick's cancer fundraising event. So far the trio have raised $2,445.“I figure this is going to save me a fortune in shampoo,” joked Mr Johnston-Barnes.On a more serious note he said one of the reasons he wanted to do it was that one of his friends was diagnosed with breast cancer in her mid-20s.“She is finished with treatment now but cancer is normally something you think of the elderly getting. It was a shock when I found out.”He became involved with St Baldrick's only a few weeks ago when he heard his friends discussing shaving their heads.“I was planning on cutting my hair,” he said. “I actually haven't cut it in over a year. I do a lot of acting and sometimes the script requires you to have longer hair. Mind you, I wasn't planning on going as short as this, but for the cause it seems reasonable.”Mr Johnston-Barnes said the last time he had his head shaved was when he was in the Bermuda Regiment more than ten years ago.“I think when I come into work on Monday no one will recognise me; security might try to throw me out,” he joked. “The good news is I will be very aerodynamic. Everything is coming off including the beard. Not the eyebrows though, unless someone comes up with a dump truck full of money.”Over the last 13 years, the St Baldrick's Foundation has seen more than 190,500 people worldwide shave their heads, raising more than $118 million for life-saving childhood cancer research. In Bermuda, those who participate can choose to give their funds raised either to PALS or to the larger St Baldrick's organisation in the United States. The headshaving will be held at the Bermuda Athletic Association gymnasium on Woodlands Road in Pembroke on Friday starting at 4.30pm.To make a donation visit: www.stbaldricks.org/participants/mypage/611763/2013.
