Eagles oust cup minnows

The last of the Commercial League teams bowed out of the FA Cup yesterday as Somerset Eagles became the first Second Division team to book a place in the quarter-finals.

Eagles will no doubt be relieved to have survived this tie as in the previous two rounds they were also drawn against Commercial League teams and didn't exactly have things their own way.

The first time out they needed a replay to beat Robin Hood 2-1 following a 2-2 draw. Then two late second half goals got them past Fire Services in the second round.

In this match at White Hill Field they were always the better team and a goal in each half by Stephen Burrows gave them a deserved victory.

Eagles should have taken the lead in the 12th minute when a ball into the Lobster Pot penalty area landed perfectly for Shannon Morrissey who failed to get off a shot as goalkeeper Simon Kilpatrick hurried off his line and the ball was cleared.

Pot had their best chance of the match in the 24th minute when, from a free kick on the left, the ball came back off the Eagles defence and Tony Smith's shot from inside the box brought off a good save from the diving Ricky Tucker.

Eddie Callender went close with two efforts for Eagles. The first he hooked wide and then watched as a header went over the bar. The move had been engineered by player-coach Kenny Thompson who was an inspiration in midfield.

Thompson set up the opening goal two minutes before the break after collecting a pass from the right side by Morrissey. Thompson knocked a pass forward into the box and Burrows, as he challenged 'keeper Kilpatrick, got a slight touch for the ball to roll into an empty net.

Eagles always looked more controlled with their short passing game and they put the match out of Pot's reach in the 53rd minute when Burrows side-footed home a cross from the left.

Eagles missed a host of chances in the half, including an effort from Thompson just two minutes earlier that flashed over the bar.

Frank Smith pushed forward late in the game and volleyed over the top before Minors supplied a low hard cross from the right which went past the far post untouched.
