Hoehn forced to use all his guile

Ted Hoehn was forced to call upon all his experience, and wit, before coming away with a hard earned 7-6 (6-1), 6-2 victory over unseeded Morgan Smith during quarter-final action in the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Club Invitational at the Coral Beach Tennis Club yesterday.

The Vermont resident roared off to a 5-2 lead before Smith, who hails from Pennsylvania, caught his second wind and ripped off five straight games, including three service breaks to take a 6-5 lead. But from there it was almost downhill as Hoehn came back to win the all important 12th game at love before romping to victory in the tie-break, dropping just one point.

From then on he took his game to another level, leaving Smith in his wake, winning the second set 6-2 and a place in the semi-final where he will take on fellow American and third seed Ron Groff in today's semi-final.

Groff advanced following his straight sets victory over Bermudian Sandy Frith-Brown in the quarter-final, winning 6-2, 6-0. In the other quarter-final yesterday second seed Scott Estes breezed past Tony Terrell in straight sets, winning 6-3, 6-0. He will take on Bermudian Vernal Davis in today's semi-finals after Davis had earlier upset fourth seeded Dennis Cross.

In one of the day's highlight matches, the American pair of Janet Burke-Green and her coach Dick Mount for the second time this week upset a seeded pair, yesterday ousting the favoured Bermudian duo of Gill Butterfield and Sandy Frith-Brown when they came from a set down to take a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory.

But in easily the day's longest contest, the veteran team of Robin Blackburn and Rene Gelhay defeated Peter Purdy and Bill Webster in a three hour thriller 5-7, 7-6, 7-6.

And this in the Men's 65 doubles!

Meanwhile the first final of the week will take place today when top seed Herb Bascome faces second seed and a Bermuda favourite, Dick Mount, for the Men's 65 title.

Mount got past Walter Milborne 6-2, 7-5 in yesterday's semi-final, taking match point on a deft drop shot that left his opponent hoping, while glued to the baseline.

In another interesting match that resulted in an upset, Debbie Kelly surprised Faith Bascome 6-3, 6-2 in the Ladies 45 singles, and has the unenviable task of facing second ranked Gill Butterfield in the semi-final, while top seed Maureen O'Berg eased past Sara Peniston 6-0, 6-1.
