UBP forum strives for local solutions
All Bermudians are invited to take part in the Opposition United Bermuda Party's (UBP) annual conference which starts tomorrow at the New Testament Church of God's Heritage Hall in Hamilton.
Participants will be involved in, what is for the UBP, a radically new approach to conducting its annual deliberations. Past conferences have been open to members only. Party chairman Wayne Furbert denied a suggestion that the party had opened up the conference because it was struggling to find members.
"Our membership is growing," he said.
"As chairman I want to bring a different focus. We want to hear from a broader perspective of Bermudians."
The overall conference theme is "Bermuda finding Bermuda Solutions". "I believe that the answers to most of our problems lie within these 21-square miles," Mr. Furbert said.
"When it comes to technical solutions we may need to go overseas. But on human issues - tourism, healthcare, education the solutions lie within these 21 square miles."
Two public sessions will be held with each one focusing on a different series of questions to be work-shopped in small groups.
Mr. Furbert revealed that personnel from the Diversity Institute would be facilitating the workshops. Tomorrow's workshop groups will address the meaning of full economic participation, ways to achieve equal educational opportunity for all and "which tourism theme and product is relevant for today."
