Somerset lacked the will to win -- Foggo
of many at Wellington Oval, the chairman of the St. George's selection committee boldly predicted that his team would still manage to pull off a victory....but it never materialised.
Even with the wicket playing slowly and the St. George's batsmen replying at 150 for two in reply to Somerset's 207 for nine declared -- Gregory Foggo still felt that victory was a certainty.
However the wicket did not give support to the bowlers yesterday as expected.
"We thought the wicket would deteriorate more, but it seemed to get better as time passed,'' said Foggo.
On Thursday Foggo had also estimated that St. George's would declare about 11 a.m. on Friday morning and then put Somerset back to bat. No, this was not the case because St. George's batted on until 12.15 p.m. and then put Somerset back to bat.
"I think our skipper was looking for a two to one. We figured that we could get a nice lead then get them out cheaply,'' said Foggo.
His counterpart at Somerset, Kevin Saunders, attributed his team's failure to win to the fact that the batting was disappointing in the first innings.
"Our front line batsmen didn't bat well enough on Thursday. We were looking for around 250-300 runs around 2.30 p.m. and this would have given our bowlers a good chance,'' said Saunders.
"But I have no regrets in the team selection, we selected players who were supposed to do the job. St. George's got good batting support, when a number eight batsman like Dean Minors comes and scores like he did, it shows their strength.'' GOOD DEBUT -- Somerset's Anthony (Porky) Manders celebrated his first Cup Match with 55 in the second innings before being dismissed on the last ball of the match.
PLENTY OF PROMISE -- Whether batting, bowling or fielding Lionel Cann showed why in his first Cup Match why he is rated so highly. He took two wickets, scored 44 runs and held two catches.
