Space going fast at this year's summer camps!
What's your kid doing this summer? If you're still unsure, you have many things to choose from but you better hurry -- places are filling up and deadlines are approaching.
When picking an activity for your child or teenager it would be wise to look at what your child excels in or enjoys and choose a summer camp that focuses on that sport or activity.
And for pre-schoolers many of the nurseries and afterschool programmes offer a mixture of educational and fun activities, from building sand castles and jumping in fun castles, to tours of dairy farms and the Aquarium.
Summer activities co-ordinator for Youth, Sport and Recreation Hilary Boden said for five- to 10-year-olds there are seven summer camps being offered.
"Each camp offers a variety of activities such as arts, music, sports and dance on a daily basis and most of the activities are centred around the summer camp theme Under the Sea with You and Me,'' Mrs. Boden said.
She added: "Because of the theme there will be a lot of water sports and it is also the International year of the coral reef so we have also incorporated that into our theme with trips planned to the Aquarium, snorkelling park and the Biological Station.'' The camps for this age group start on June 30 and end on August 15. Mrs. Boden also said for ages 11 to 13 there were four camps available.
"There is a Boys to Men camp which is just for boys, and a We're Coming Out which is just for girls,'' Mrs. Boden said.
She added: "We also have a style camp which focuses on fashion and interior design and personal hygiene, and then we have our performing workshop which is centred around dance and drama, all the aspects of theatre.
"These camps run at different times throughout July and August.'' For the little kids the Club House Kids Programme offers daily swimming, boat trips, jet skiing, bowling, tennis, mini golf, squash, fishing, arts and crafts, cooking activities, games and contests, video games, nature activities and lots more.
A Club House supervisor said: "We do all the children's movies that come into the movie theatres, and educational tours of businesses like the dairy factory.
"The older children will visit the Drug Abuse Centre where they will watch films and have discussions. We also do the touristy outings that are age appropriate touring the forts, glass blowing factory etc.'' She added: "We will also have special event days where we will have a fun castle and magician visits. Kids are divided up into different age groups and each group has their own teacher so they are not all doing the same things every day. The camp runs from June 13 to September 5. 8.20 a.m. to 5.45 p.m.
Monday to Friday.
"Our age group in four and a half to 12 and we are asking parents to register right away. There are only a few spaces left for summer.'' If you have a young computer whiz-kid at home you may be interested in sending him or her to Creative Computer Services on Saturday mornings.
They are offering an eight-week programme for kids which is every Saturday, from ages three to 14.
And kids will learn educational games using spelling, math and English and the three-year-olds will learn to identify objects, sizes, letter and numbers. For kids interested in gymnastics the Bermuda Gymnastics Association will have a summer camp at St. David's annex June 30 to September 5 and at the Whitney Institute gymnasium July 14 to September 5.
Head coach Walid Mustafa said kids will do gymnastics in the mornings and in the afternoon they will go on outings.
"This is strictly recreational so beginners will have no problem. You just have to have enthusiasm for it,'' he added.
The camps are $125 per week 8.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. ages five to 11.
Application forms available from Sportseller, Washington Mall or call 236-7118. Half-day (mornings) also offered at Whitney Gym only $75 per week.
