Mallory caps a memorable year

Greg Frigerio for the second week in a row to land the men's open title at the 68th Coral Beach Invitational Tournament.

Again Mallory, who won a three-set victory over Frigerio in the BLTA final last Saturday, had to come from a set down before overcoming his opponent 3-6 6-4 7-5 in a match lasting three hours.

Frigerio saved a break point in the fifth game of the first set, then went on to break Mallory in the seventh game with a fine backhand down the line as Mallory rushed to the net.

Mallory returned the favour in the second set, as Frigerio saved three break points before succumbing to a top spin backhand cross court shot that lifted suddenly to beat Frigerio's racquet head.

The match remained with serve until the 11th game of the final set. Then Frigerio opened with a double fault -- his first of the contest -- and fell 0-30 when Mallory punched a backhand to his opponent's forehand side and the second seed couldn't lift his return high enough to clear the net. That was all the encouragement Mallory needed as he won the game for a 6-5 lead, then held at 30 after Frigerio had save two match points.

To lose a tight one for the second successive week to the same opponent was a tough pill to swallow for Frigerio.

"I just can't get over these tight matches,'' he said afterwards. "I've not had that kind of match fitness. Ricky has had many such matches this year and he knows how to win the close ones -- an experience I haven't had this year.'' However, admitted Frigerio: "Ricky served well and that was the difference.

If I'd had a look at a second service things might have been different, but that wasn't the case.'' Mallory, meanwhile, continued his dominance, teaming with his championship doubles partner of last week, Mark Cordeiro, to take the men's doubles open title. Again, Mallory took time to get into the match as the duo recovered from losing the first set 6-3 to Stuart Smith and Mike Curry to take the next two 6-4 6-4.

Smith and Curry looked like winning the title early on as Mallory and Cordeiro combined to commit 34 unforced errors in the first two sets. But Mallory claimed he remained confident all the time, saying: "I knew we would win. All we had to do was settle down and not panic.'' He explained that the combination of playing football for PHC on Thursday night and his gruelling match against Frigerio had left his legs stiff and it wasn't until the third set that he felt comfortable.

Meanwhile, young Tara Lambert captured her first senior title at Coral Beach when she defeated Mary Giordano 7-5 6-3 in the ladies' open final.

Nina Alami and Anne Jones took the ladies doubles 45 title with a 7-6 6-1 triumph over top seeds Gill Butterfield and Barbara Lambert, but Butterfield returned later to capture the mixed doubles open crown when she and Mike Curry defeated Wendy Gelhay and Chris Harris.

Butterfield then completed another routine day, teaming up with Kelly Holland to win the ladies doubles open crown with a straight sets victory over Gelhay and Sheila Gomez.

The century mixed doubles title went to Helen Pecori and Earl Leader, who overcame Julie Lunn and Eldon Daniels 6-4 2-6 6-4.

Roscoe Tanner, the former Australian Open winner beaten in both the men's open and men's 45 doubles events, returned to take the doubles open consolation title with Gary Holland. They saw off the challenge of Eugene Simmons and Jan Jarmula.

One of the off-court highlights of the week came during the prize-giving when Allan Simmons was chosen to receive the Olin Parks Memorial Award as the individual deemed to have contributed most to the success of the Bermuda Invitational Tennis Tournament.
