One motorist arrested on suspicion of impaired driving

Just one motorist was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving over the Cup Match holiday and there were no serious accidents.

Anti drink-drive campaign CADA said it was pleased with the news, but asked Police to step up traffic checks nonetheless.

The one person arrested was a 41-year-old woman who was stopped by officers outside a liquor store in Sandys and was allegedly found to be two-and-a-half times the legal limit.

She pleaded not guilty when charged at Magistrates' Court yesterday.

There were no other arrests recorded for the period spanning 7 a.m. on Wednesday to 7 a.m. yesterday, according to a Police spokesman.

However, there were ten collisions that left people injured and 13 more that left only the vehicles damaged.

Nine vehicles were stolen.

Reacting to the news yesterday, Anthony Santucci, chairman of CADA, said: "CADA is very pleased that there were no serious, or fatal, road traffic collisions over the Cup Match holiday.

"CADA is also pleased that last month's quarterly crime statistics report, issued by the Bermuda Police Service, showed a six percent increase in road traffic enforcement activity compared to this time last year. However, more road traffic enforcement is still needed."

He repeated calls for random check points to be set up to catch drunk drivers, as is done in the UK and Canada. Officers stop every car to check licences and registration plates, but also perform roadside breath tests if they believe the driver is impaired.

"When these checkpoints have been set up in other jurisdictions, and the public have been given ample notice in advance that the checks will be taking place, there has been a significant reduction in the number of alcohol-related road collisions and fatalities," said Mr. Santucci.

He added: "CADA especially supports their use at particular key times, such as evenings, weekends and holidays. CADA will continue to work with all parties to assist in bringing such safeguards to Bermuda."
