Visitors lament closure of Lighthouse, Church Bay
Visitors are increasingly disappointed by the lack of repairs done to Gibbs Hill Lighthouse and Church Bay.
The landmark and beauty spot have remained in a ?broken? state for almost two years after being blown away by Hurricane Fabian in September, 2003.
The missing and rusty railings at the top of the lighthouse and the broken lens are keeping tourists and locals from going out on the platform when they visit, according to one lighthouse keeper, who wished to remain anonymous. The platform has been designated as unsafe by Works and Engineering engineers.
?Tourists come all the way up here and can?t go all the way to the platform,? he said.
He told that Works and Engineering staff took pieces out of the railings and sent them abroad to be fixed shortly after they were damaged ? but have yet to reappear. The lighthouse keeper also said that he wanted to see the repairs done quickly, adding that they had dragged on far too long.
?We have been hit on the head with a hammer,? he said.
Tourists also said they were upset when they realised that they could not get out on the platform and take pictures of the amazing view.
Ernie Lewis, who brought his family from Canada to the lighthouse, said: ?$2.50 to walk up steps? I can walk up steps in my own house?.
At Church Bay tourists also said they were upset that the beach had not been fixed after almost two years since Hurricane Fabian. The hurricane left the beach wrecked and washed away the walkway. People now have to climb down rock by rock in order to get to the beach.
?I am disappointed it?s closed because it?s really good for snorkelling,? said Larry Massing, from Florida.
His wife Judy, who is originally from Somerset, suggested that boulders or something similar could be put down for people to walk down.
Jeff Curtis, from Marion, Massachusetts said: ?It?s so inconvenient to climb down. I assumed the unsafe area was an undertow but then I saw this?.
DeDe Morley, of Florida said: ?I was scared to walk down there and it should be roped off until it?s fixed.
