BFA bring back Bean in coaching shake-up

coaching committee just four months after he was replaced by former national coach Carlton (Pepe) Dill.

But with Bean now back in charge, BFA general secretary David Sabir this week insisted that there was no "real significance'' to the latest developments.

The shuffle comes about on the heels of the recent Sir John Sharpe Board of Inquiry report into drugs in soccer -- although Sabir would not confirm that the two were related.

It was only last last summer that Bean replaced Dr. Gerard Bean as coaching committee chairman, only to have the reins snatched away and handed to Dill earlier this year following the dismissal of technical director Burkhard Ziese.

Now Dill is again on the outside peering in, with Bean resuming his position in charge.

Asked whether the recent change signified controversy or a difference of opinion among BFA executives, Sabir gave a terse response.

"We are on to something positive, I am not going into any gossip,'' he said.

"Gladwyn Bean is the new chairman, the committee is working. Now if you want to deal with what they are doing progressive and positive that's something else, but to ask what's going on then that's gossip.

"The changes may well be necessary. The committee has released a lot of good plans and if that's not good enough to report on then fine. I am not going into what else could be going on. We are about progressing. We have a committee in place that is working.'' Bean's new committee consists of Danvers Seymour, Jon Beard, Robert Calderon and David Kneisler.

The committee that was named by BFA president Richard Thompson to operate under Dill's chairmanship early in the year consisted of Leroy Lewis, Alfred Eve, Conrad Simons, Beard and Kneisler.

When asked to clarify the position of Dill, Sabir said: "He is a director and no longer chairman of the coaching committee.'' Asked what he thought were the reasons behind the recent changes to the coaching committee, Dill said he was unable to give comment.

"I am not the spokesperson for the association and as a result I must refuse to make a comment in reference to the decision. The person you may need to ask is the general secretary or the president, but certainly not myself,'' said Dill.

BFA president Thompson could not be reached for comment, but he was upbeat in February when Dill replaced Bean as chairman.

Previously the BFA had abandoned the use of a committee and instead experimented with two people in charge of coaching -- Gladwyn Bean as the chairman and Ziese.

But this system failed to get the results that Thompson wanted and he had Bean replaced by the more experienced Dill and also returned to the old commmittee system.

"I recognised early in November that things were not working out in coaching the way I thought they should and I told Mr. Bean that I would make a change and go back to the coaching committee. He understood my views and gave me his full support on the matter,'' said the president at the time.

Bean, also, would not debate the recent changes when approached this week but said he was "overjoyed'' about regaining his position.

He was also enthusiastic about the objectives the committee had listed as its main priorities.

"There is no real significance to the change, we are just trying to get the right mix and I think we have got it now. We've got some people there who are working pretty hard,'' said the new chairman.

The first goal is to support the Under-23 team in its preparation for the Olympic qualification round, to enforce the reinstatement of the various national teams with qualified coaches and to also reintroduce a coaches certification programme.

"The committee is hopeful that it can help to raise the level of football in Bermuda by assisting the coaching fraternity to improve the standard of coaching and ultimately improve the standard of play,'' said Bean.

"It is also intended to form an active liaison with the Bermuda Secondary Schools Federation with a purpose of assisting in the further soccer development in the schools.'' BACK IN CHARGE -- Gladwyn Bean (right) will again run the BFA coaching committee with the help of Danvers Seymour (left) and Jon Beard. Also on the committee are Robert Calderon and David Kneisler.
