Opposition parties issue road safety warnings after second death of the year
Politicians from the United Bermuda Party and the Bermuda Democratic Alliance have warned that Bermuda needs to slow down on the roads to avoid more deaths.
Speaking after the second road fatality of the year Michael Fahy, of the BDA ,and Michael Dunkley, of the UBP, both offered their condolences to the family of 23-year-old Dereiko Simons, who died early on Sunday morning.
Mr. Fahy said: "It's incredibly sad any time you open the paper and there's another death on Bermuda's roads. There doesn't seem to be a lot that's being done about it. We talk about measures, but it seems to be taking too long to put the measures in place. It's sad because a lot of these things are preventable.
"The BDA will work with the Government, or with the Opposition party, to make sure that things get done. People have been talking about this for a long time, we need to get it done. We're sympathetic towards the family and towards the people who are injured in these accidents, but we can find a way to stop it. We need to follow through with the recommendations of the experts."
Mr. Dunkley said: "To have a sudden death like this, it's always hard to stomach. I feel like we're preaching to people who are not even listening. We have rules in place, but the fact of the matter is that we've allowed conditions to deteriorate.
"It used to be that the speed limit was 35 and people drove 40. Now the speed limit is still 35, but people drive 60. The faster you go, the more accidents you're going to have, and the more people are going to get killed. People are just doing what they want to on the roads."
A Police spokesman said: "The Bermuda Police Service extends sincere condolences to the family & friends of Mr. Simons, who was involved in a collision that occurred around 11.40 p.m. on Saturday on Somerset Road in Sandys parish, near the junction with Morgan Hill.
"It appears that Mr. Simons was riding a motorcycle travelling west on Somerset Road when he collided with a car travelling in the opposite direction. Mr. Simons sustained multiple injuries, including serious internal injuries, a head injury and two broken legs. He was rushed to KEMH via ambulance, where he was subsequently pronounced dead by an on call physician at 2.33 a.m. on Sunday.
"The driver of the car, a 42-year-old Sandys man, was not injured. His passengers, a 43-year-old Sandys man and a 70-year-old Sandys man, were also uninjured.
"The motorcycle was extensively damaged, while the car received moderate front end damage. Inquiries into this incident are ongoing. Police are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to contact PC Olasunkanmi Akinmola on 295-0011."
