Parish make point in dour encounter

Dandy Town 0 A dour goalless draw at Wellington Oval had more to offer the residents in nearby houses than the fans who bothered to turn up.

Because three balls hammered out of the ground will have found new homes with some of St. George's younger footballers, while the supporters inside must have wished they'd brought their boots with them.

It's not that each lost ball was the result of shocking finishing.

But there was plenty of poor punch in front of goal from both bottom club Parish and third-placed Dandy Town.

The visitors certainly had the better of play on a bobbly pitch which hardly suited their quick passing style.

But they still had to look to the heavens to thank divine intervention for stopping the home side taking a 2-0 lead into half-time.

Left-sided Anthony Webb could have triggered an amazing upset when he beat the keeper after being put through one-on-one after just 20 minutes.

But the only amazing thing was that he managed to slice the ball into the side netting when he simply had to trickle the ball into an empty net from eight yards.

His teammate Irving Burgess might have scored five minutes later, when Sean Dean and Deon Raynor combined cleverly on the edge of the area to set him free on goal.

But his shot flew wide -- and that was the end of the Hot Peppers' attacking contributions to a bland match.

Thankfully, there were a few isolated goalmouth incidents.

Reggie Tucker fired Dandy Town's best chance over the bar, latching onto a Darron Simons shot that rebounded to him from the woodwork.

And two minutes before the break, Tucker split the home defence for McLee Smith to race clear but see his feeble shot blocked by sprawling goalkeeper Ricky Hill.

The second half was notable only for two bookings, four substitutions and those three lost balls.

A bad first touch by Simons let him down when he was in a position to put Dandy Town in front. And the same player drilled a shot across goal only for Smith to slide in at the far post and fail to connect by inches.

There was one more incident of note on 82 minutes. That was when Hamilton Parish managed to hit their first shot on target, through Irving Burgess.
