Updates on hurricane-related information could soon be sent automatically to all cell phone users, according to Public Safety Minister Michael Dunkley.The Minister said at a press conference today on Hurricane Awareness Week: “Clear, fast and reliable information is vitally important.“I have asked a team from the agencies represented on the Emergency Measures Organisation to develop a partnership with local communications service providers to get accurate information to cell phone subscribers as part of our communication effort.“I am pleased to say that these discussions are already well advanced and a further announcement will be made shortly.”The Minister urged the public to prepare in advance of the Atlantic Hurricane Season, which begins next week and continues until the end of November.“Don’t wait until the last minute to check for your supply of batteries, fuel for your car or bike and even your generator,” Mr Dunkley said.“Make sure your property is secured, check that your insurance is up to date and any trees are properly trimmed and safely away from power lines. For boat owners, make sure your boat is secure well in advance of the storm.“Lastly, don’t forget your pets. They cannot fend for themselves. They have to rely on us.”Bermuda Weather Service director Kimberley Zuill said the season is expected to be an active one, with as many as 18 or 19 storms forecast.“It’s important to remember that it only takes one system to make it a very active season for Bermuda,” she said.She encouraged the public to visit www.weather.bm and click on the red Hurricane Awareness icon for a series of videos about hurricane preparedness.
