BOA keep eye on Games problems

Bermuda's presence at the Pan-Am Games in August should not be hit by organisational troubles in the host country of the Dominican Republic.

The Island is expected to be well represented at the event which runs from August 1 to 17 despite delays in the building work at some venues.

President of Bermuda Olympic Association John Hoskins said: "There are some concerns. I think some of the facilities are not ready."

A meeting of the executive is to be held shortly and discussions on progress will take place then.

A meeting of the chefs de mission will then take place early next month, and Bermuda will be represented.

"I think one of the big problems involves an area for canoeing - they really hadn't done anything to get that going. So there is a chance that the canoeing will not take place," said Hoskins.

"In a lot of the sports they have had the facilities there for some while, so there will be no problem with those. But there will be one or two sports where, if the facilities are not there, they will just cut them out. That is the threat.

"I don't think any of our sports will be affected."
