Sibling rivals take national honours

Both Andrew and Laura Robinson took top honours in the Bermuda National Junior Squash Championships held over the weekend.

With both players having their main rivals, James Stout and Morgan Lightbourne, absent from the tournament, held at the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association on Middle Road, playing conditions were made a little easier for the brother and sister duo.

In the Boys Under-19 event a round robin was held which included Andrew Robinson, Michael Shrubb, Graham Counsell, Fraser Moore and James Bergl.

Robinson won the event and was unbeaten throughout the tournament. Having just lost to Robinson in the final of the Boys Under-17 event, the past few days of squash had taken its toll on Shrubb's legs and he could not muster enough strength to beat his rival in the Under-19 event and finished runner-up. Counsell finished third, Bergl fourth and Moore fifth.

Players were allowed to participate in more than one event and this meant that many of them would be playing up to five matches in one day and often the same player in two events.

In the quarter-finals of the Boys Under-17 event Andrew Stout managed to outplay 12-year-old Robert Maycock.

However, Andrew Stout and Counsell could not stop Robinson and Shrubb from making it a double final. Counsell took Shrubb to five games losing 3-2 but Stout was unable to take Robinson the full distance and lost 3-0. Robinson then went on to win the Boys Under-17 event and showed Shrubb what to expect in their next encounter.

Chris Sgobba showed that the past few years at school overseas had not gone to waste and finished third in the Boys Under-15 beating Alistair Melvin in the play-off.

Stout beat Iain Redford 3-0 for the Boys Under-15 title.

The title of most improved player has to go to Robert Forbes who finished runner-up to Caribbean Champion Maycock in the Boys Under-13 event. Jeffrey Olson beat archrival Jeffrey Counsell in the third and fourth play-off. Olson never dropped a game to win the Boys Under-11 event, while nine-year-old Christopher Stout finished second and Jason Shrubb third.

Like her brother Andrew, Laura Robinson never dropped a game in the entire tournament and won both the Girls Under-17 and 15 events.

Caty Luckhurst had the same misfortune as Shrubb playing in both events and finishing runner-up to the same player.

Kristen Law finished third in the Under-17 event while Alex Furtado finished third in the Under-15 event.

The Girls Under-13 event had more laughter than squash. Furtado, who played in all three events, won the round robin by beating Rachel Barnes and Jacqui Lewis. Barnes finished second and Lewis third.
