Stout's fine form continues in US

Bermuda's James Stout's fine run of form continued at the US Junior Olympics in Yale where he negotiated a tricky first round tie.

Stout, who made it through to the semi-finals of the Canadian Junior Open at the weekend, was up against Jason Delierre of Quebec in the Under-19 division yesterday.

After going two games up, Stout was dragged back to 2-2, before overpowering his opponent in the decider to take the tie 3-2 (9-1; 10-8; 7-9; 5-9; 9-1).

The Island's Richard Arnold was not so fortunate, losing 3-0 (9-0; 9-0; 9-0) to number nine seed Jacob Himmelrich. Justin Robinson lost 3-0 (9-3; 9-1; 9-3) to Ben Ende, also seeded nine.

Fellow Bermudian Michael Shrubb was another to emerge victorious, this time in the Under-17 division where he saw off the challenge of Alex Salton 3-1 (2-9; 9-5; 9-3; 9-2).

Andrew Robinson lost to number nine seed Andrew Zimmerman 3-0 (9-2; 9-7; 9-1), while Graham Counsell fell by the same scoreline (9-3; 9-0; 9-0).

In the Under-15 division Iain Redford defeated Billy Abrams 3-0 (10-8; 9-1; 9-2) before falling to third seed Dave Glass by the same scoreline (9-0; 9-2; 9-3).

In the same division Douglas Olson lost 3-0 (9-0; 9-0; 9-2) to Allan Lutz. He then competed in the consolation going down 3-0 (9-1; 9-2; 9-3) to David DiDonato.

Alistair Melvin also went out in that division, losing 3-0 (9-3; 9-1; 9-1) to Robby Denious.

In the Under-15 division Robert Maycock went out to Todd Harrity, but not without a fight - the Bermudian losing 3-2 (9-3; 8-10; 6-9; 9-7; 9-1).

In the girls' competition, Alex Furtado flew the flag for Bermuda in the Under-13 division, seeing off the challenge of Sommer Carroll 3-1 (9-3; 10-8; 3-9; 9-7).

In the Under-15 division, Caty Luckhurst lost out to Hannah Conant 3-0 (9-1; 9-3; 9-0).

Morgan Lightbourne lost to Charlotte Steel 3-0 (9-1; 9-1; 9-3) in the Under-17 division, but compatriot Kristen Law came away with a victory by default over Arianna Kourides.

Gary Furtado, in the boys Under-15s, and Jessica Mitchell, in the girls Under-19s, were said to have not played their respective games and therefore failed to advance.
