Horns are warning devices August 11, 2000
Why is it that so many Bermudians feel compelled to acknowledge a road courtesy with a blast on their horn: (a) It's against the law. The car horn is a warning device; (b) It creates confusion; (c) It adds to our already high levels of noise pollution; and (d) The most important of all, it frightens the daylights out of our visitors.
When they hear a horn they think they are in danger.
HFS Paget Rules for success August 16, 2000 Dear Sir, I read with great interest the article featured in your Business section dated August 11, 2000 "Blacks must take advantage. Jump on the e-commerce bandwagon''.
First of all I would like to congratulate and encourage the two young men for having the foresight and determination and I wish them success in their new venture.
I think it is just as important to recognise that one of these two men is Bermudian and that we as a country must continue to create and cultivate an environment where the entrepreneurial spirit is encouraged and available to all Bermudians.
It does trouble me that there is a disproportionate distribution of wealth between black and white Bermudians, but having said that, I do see around me a lot of new middle class blacks who are going about their quiet lives making strides and taking advantage of the opportunities Bermuda has to offer.
Yes, there are those that would have you believe that there are no opportunities out there especially if you are black. I believe there are opportunities out there not if you are black, white male or female but if you are prepared to follow these important rules: An education; Hard work; Drug free; Stay focused; Self-esteem (believe in yourself); Do not let setbacks discourage you; Have patience; and Avoid becoming a parent too early.
Bermuda is not immune to racism. The world is not immune to racism in some form or another. Many people have succeeded in life because of the colour of their skin, religious beliefs, their gender, so on and so forth. There are also a lot of success stories in Bermuda because these individuals worked hard, stayed focused and made sacrifices. There are no short cuts to success.
I would like to piggy-back if I may on what Dale Butler has said and I think this Government and the Opposition should focus on sustaining Bermuda's economic climate so that all Bermudians may take advantage of the opportunities out there.
RAMADHIN (RAMMY) SMITH Pembroke Fix dispatch system August 10, 2000 Dear Sir, I'm calling on Dr. Ewart Brown, Minister of Transport, and also Minister of Telecommunications Renee Webb to investigate Bermuda's Radio Cabs. Bermuda's largest taxi dispatch company two-way dispatch system radio cabs are unable to communicate to taxi drivers in various areas I believe due to communications problems and transmitting at the telecoms system.
It's been that way for the last three months right in the height of the season and the taxi riders are held ransom and it is most unfair to taxi drivers paying to radio cabs for dispatch service.
And this is leading to serious transmitting problems for taxi drivers and dispatchers. Thank you Mr. Editor and I hope through your valuable editorial Bermuda Government's Transport Minister and Telecommunications Minister can help to rectify the serious problem.
A VETERAN TAXI OWNER Warwick Thanks, big brother August 13, 2000 Dear Sir, Please allow space for the following thank you and a huge one at that! Recently, the Masterworks Gallery at 97 Front Street was flooded from "The Restaurant'' above.
Colonial Insurance, who has insured Masterworks through sponsorship, was on the scene instantly and not only treated us as brothers, they reassured us regarding items to be claimed and also allowed the Colonial Foyer Gallery to host Artists-Up-Front Street. The programme continued without interruption! Artists-Up-Front Street is currently on Reid Street! Thank you Colonial Insurance, for taking the crisis out of disaster. We thank Alan Peacock, William Madeiros, Peter Oliver, Ianthia Welch, Matthew Crumbley and the whole Colonial Team for the very special support. Big Brother, we love you!
