Collieson's hopes end in El Salvador

James Collieson

Bermudian James Collieson's brief run of good fortune at the Central American and Caribbean Games (CAC) ended yesterday.

The ninth seed went down 7-5, 6-1 to Kepler Orellana of Venezuela in El Salvador as the tennis competition continued. Earlier this week, 25-year-old Collieson enjoyed a bye and then a straight-sets victory over Lenin Mongerie of the Virgin Islands.

Orellana, the tournament's fourth seed, now advances to the quarter-finals.

In Mexico, which is hosting the Games' sailing segment, Bermuda's Sara Wright suffered a setback in her medal quest yesterday. She jumped the start of the seventh race in the women's Laser class and received eight points for that infringement.

That left her tied for fifth overall on 26 points while Mexican Tania Calles continues to lead the 16-race competition with eight points. Venezuela's Andrea Saba is second on 18 points and two other competitors are tied for third on 25 points.

Brett Wright, who is carrying the Island's hopes in the men's Laser class, remains 12th after seven races. He placed tenth in the seventh race yesterday and currently has 60 points.

Bermuda's gymnasts, meanwhile, are raring to go ahead of their competition's opening day on Tuesday.

The squad is made up of Kalena Astwood, Mornay Piper, Casey Lopes, Brittany Repose and Maria Darby.

"Training is going well and the girls are working well together as a team," said coach Walid Mustapha from El Salvador.
