Mayor promises action on North Hamilton

Corporation mayor Charles Gosling

Improving North Hamilton is the number one concern for new Corporation mayor Charles Gosling.

And he says neglect of the 'back of town' might have been one of the reasons Government is targeting the Corporation for abolition.

Mr. Gosling, elected with a team of supporters in July's Corporation elections, is trying to get better CCTV cameras at more locations in North Hamilton.

And he hopes to fulfil a pledge to get the new digital equipment up within 100 days of the recent election but realises with other parties involved the deadline might not quite be met. A walk around of North Hamilton is planned for this week to increase knowledge about the area.

"We will have a continuing programme, it is not just 100 days, turn the key off and walk away and concentrate on other issues. We will have a number of programmes that move on from there."

Improved road works in North Street and Union Street and new lighting for Court Street are also on the agenda while Mr. Gosling hopes to reinstate other stalled projects in the Economic Empowerment Zone (EEZ).

"We want to improve the environment up there to make it a better place to reside in and also to encourage businesses."

A town-hall meeting planned for next month will log accomplishments and unveil further plans said Mr Gosling. Asked if he thought Government had targeted the Corporation for abolition partly because of the City's neglect of the back of town he said: "I would think so.

"There have been so many opportunities for conversations to take place.

"I think those opportunities were squandered. It's not the fault of one party but I would think the Corporation was a significant contributor to that."

Mr. Gosling said he has already met with the Bermuda Small Business Development Corporation and the Uptown Market Association which are heavily involved in the EEZ which is seeking to revive the economy of North Hamilton.

And he hopes to meet with the Pembroke MPs whose seats cover the City boundaries they include Wayne Perinchief, Ashfield DeVent, Louise Jackson and the successor to the late Nelson Bascome.
