Dr. Brown emerges and is still in charge

After a meeting lasting nearly six hours at Progressive Labour Party headquarters last night Premier Ewart Brown emerged still in charge.

But beyond that it was difficult to tell what had transpired after rebel MPs put the issue of Dr. Brown's leadership on the table.

At 11.30 last night a smiling Dr. Brown emerged from Alaska Hall.

Asked if he had been victorious he said: "Victory is a strong word but I am happy the members of the caucus expressed their confidence in me."

Attorney General Kim Wilson said: "Everything is fine, just like we expected."

However most MPs and Senators refused to speak to the press.

The crisis talks occurred after last Wednesday's caucus meeting saw a surprise move to oust Dr. Brown as PLP leader.

It was instigated by senior backbenchers Wayne Perinchief and Randy Horton and reportedly supported by former Premier Alex Scott.

But it was unclear, a week on, what has been decided.

It's understood a large portion of the meeting of MPs and Senators was taken up discussing the death of former MP Reverend Dr. Wilbur 'Larry' Lowe.

Rev. Lowe represented St. George's South for the PLP from 1998 to 2003 and then retired, but ended up standing in Hamilton West after saying the party was "desperately looking for a candidate".

Last night the PLP issued a statement which said: "It is with a sense of profound sense of loss that we mourn the passing of our esteemed colleague, the late Reverend Dr. Wilbur 'Larry' Lowe.

"He served his God, his party and his Country with distinction.

"We express heartfelt condolences to his family and his congregation in their time of bereavement. May his soul Rest in Peace."
