A new 5K road race has been introduced this year which will start and end at Horseshoe Bay.

The IAS Park Beach to Beach Race ? also part of the KPMG Junior Series ? is scheduled for Sunday, March 18 and will take the place of the sponsor?s 5K road race which was previously held in Dockyard.

The route is a challenging one. Runners will start on Horseshoe Bay and head east over the dunes and towards the car park at Chaplin Bay, before running up the hill to South Shore Road opposite the Bermuda Regiment.

The race will then head further east along South Shore to Astwood Park before looping back towards Horseshoe Bay along the same route.

Part of the proceeds from the race will be donated to the Coalition for the Protection of Children.

Deadline for entries has been set for March 10 and forms can be picked up at the Sportseller, Sports R?Us, The International Race Shop as well as at the IAS Park offices at 44 Church Street, Hamilton.

This Sunday, meanwhile, Swan?s Running Club are hosting the 14th annual Ed Sherlock Five Mile Road Race which begins from the Southampton Rangers Sports Club.

The race used to be held in June, but organisers are hoping that February?s cooler temperatures will help to encourage a larger turn-out.

Sherlock is a living legend on the local road running scene, having won six May 24 Marathon Derbies.

In 2005 he was inducted into the Bermuda Hall of Fame and although he has hung up his running shoes, he will be present at the race to present prizes.

Races for juniors (ages eight to 15 years) and adult runners and walkers will begin at 8.30 a.m.. Juniors will run a shortened course of three miles, while the adults will run or walk five miles.

Swan?s Running Club will be making a donation to Jahquae Richardson ? a seven-year-old girl suffering from Cystic Fibrosis ? to assist with her medical costs.

Entry forms are available from Sportseller, International Sports Shop and Sports ?R? Us. The entry deadline is this Friday at 5 p.m. Late entries will be accepted on race day. For more information contact the race director, Wendy Griffin, on 234-5794.
