Astwood seals win
(Bda win 1-0 on aggregate) A delighted national coach Clyde Best last night heaped praise on his under-20 soccer squad after they scored an impressive victory over hosts Cayman Islands in the first qualifying round of the CONCACAF zone youth World Cup.
Following a 0-0 draw in the first leg in Caymans on Sunday, Bermuda advanced 1-0 on aggregate after substitute Steven Astwood scored the deciding goal ten minutes after the interval.
Bermuda's next opponents in the competition are at present unknown.
But Best said from his Cayman hotel last night he believed his young squad were capable of going further in the competition.
"I'm very happy. Any time you win away from home, you have to be pleased. The team played extremely well tonight. I'm very proud of all of them.'' Jameiko Jennings and Kofi Dill both reportedly played superbly for the Bermuda team but it was left to Astwood to decide the tie when he converted a left wing cross in the 55th minute.
The team return to Bermuda on Friday but coach Best will likely remain behind as Bermuda's senior national squad face two Caribbean Shell Cup matches in Cayman next week against the host country on Friday, and then Cuba on Sunday, May 10.
