giving them the opportunity to tour its newly-renovated facilities and discover a bit more about the Service. An Open House this Wednesday is hoped to entice school children and those who live in the area to do just that, explained the Station's Divisional Officer, Chief Inspector Roger Brydon. "On Wednesday, we will be holding an Open House from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.,'' he said.

"It will give the public an opportunity to come and look at the new station.

The idea is to give people in the area an opportunity to come and see it first hand; to have a look at the station -- especially school kids. And hopefully people will take the opportunity to do that.'' The Somerset station was renovated just this year after more space was made available. "The building used to be jointly operated by the Post Office and the Police,'' he said.

"The Post Office moved to Mangrove Bay last year and so we extended and expanded the station to include the Post Office area as part of the station.

It's now a better equipped, larger, roomier facility. It enables us to have more space and better working conditions for officers. It's also better for the public, especially in those instances where someone comes in to make a statement. And it's much better for people who are detained there. The cell areas have changed. They've been completely renovated and each cell is enclosed and air-conditioned as is the entire station. "We were out of the station for about 5 to 6 months but moved back during the week of Cupmatch and had our official opening at the end of September. Outside the Station is landscaped. It's a much better facility and I would think the people of Somerset would be interested in seeing all the changes.'' In addition to having a chance to tour the renovated facility, visitors can also learn more about how the station operates. "Parish officers will be on hand to show displays on crime prevention and we will have some displays on board. We really want children to visit and so we've invited junior schools to come around and have a look at the station.'' A special part of Police Week, Chief Insp. Brydon added, is Thursday, the day he spends with one of the winners of the `Commissioner for a Day' essay contest. "Runners-up in the competition will each spend a day with each of the divisional officers. One will be attached to the Western Division and I will go with them through the various aspects of duty as a Divisional Officer. The Western Division extends from Cobb's Hill to the Western End of the Island so it includes Warwick, Southampton and Sandys; it's a large physical area.
