Fears of retaliatory gun battles

Guns have been around for years in Bermuda but Monday?s fatal shooting has sparked fears it could trigger retaliatory gun battles.

Sunday?s murder was the third serious unsolved gun incident in the last three months.

In April two men and a woman were shot by a gunman who entered Swinging Doors nightclub on Court Street and opened fire. No one had been charged over the incident.

Late last month an 18-year-old man was shot by a man riding past a group standing near the The Swizzle South Shore.

Then on Sunday Jason Lightbourne was gunned down while at the wheel of a car in Ord Road

One Police source said: ?Guns have always been around but it was just that guys never used them. Now it looks like they are willing to use them.?

Recently four firearms were seized at the Airport, said the source.

Sunday?s violence also saw a 19-year-old man attacked with bladed weapons.

Recently the Government passed strict laws with a mandatory three-year minimum prisons sentence for those caught with such weapons without lawful excuse.

Attorney General Larry Mussenden said the law was working well and had significantly reduced the number of incidences of people carrying such weapons.

He said: ?In many cases this has saved lives. Incidences of people being wounded with such bladed weapons have also decreased significantly.

?This is a law that is working.? But he said there would always be cases of people willing to break the law.

He said Government was well aware of the gang problem and urged young people not be involved in gangs in the first place. He also urged parents and guardians to be aware of what children were up to.

?This means knowing who their friends are, where they are going or hanging out, what they are carrying with them.?
