Bar sponsors CADA's night bus

More Police and sobriety check points will play a key role in reducing drink driving according to Anthony Santucci, Chairman of the Centre for Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention (CADA).

Mr. Santucci was speaking after receiving sponsorship from the Bermuda Bistro at The Beach for the organisation's free taxi service 'Let Us Drive'.

The Chairman said CADA would continue to lobby for more Police who play a 'key role' in making sure the roads are safe.

"CADA also believes the police have a key role to play in reducing the incidence of drinking and driving by conducting sobriety check points on a regular basis and at key times and CADA plans to continue to lobby for this," he said.

The 'Let Us Drive' service has been in operation for one year through sponsorship from Bacardi.

Since its inception, the service, which is available every Friday night from the taxi stand outside Butterfield Bank on Front Street from 3:15 a.m. to 3:45 a.m., has taken home almost 1,000 people.

Using taxis and taxi vouchers, each patron is taken to their destination free of charge and yesterday the service received a further financial boost.

Rick Olson, owner of Bermuda Bistro at The Beach, on Front Street, said his bar would be helping to sponsor the service in the name of Larry Thomas.

Mr. Thomas, a popular bartender at the Salt Rock Grill in Somerset, died in a collision with a van around 3 a.m. on April 26.

The van driver was unhurt and an investigation is ongoing.

Mr. Olson said: "We recognise the vital importance of people not drinking and driving on Bermuda's roads and we feel that supporting CADA'S Let Us Drive campaign is a commitment we must invest in to help secure the safety of all residents of Bermuda.

"We provide this sponsorship in the memory of our friend and colleague Mr. Larry Thomas as we partner with CADA who continue to find practical ways to drive home the message of not drinking and driving."

Mr. Santucci said the sponsorship would help the organisation continue in its mandate to keep the roads safe.
