Let the music play on ...

The Philharmonic Society, which temporarily disbanded in February, announced this week that it had a new Executive Committee and hoped to start practices in September.

In February members were informed via an email, which has been obtained by The Royal Gazette, that the Executive Committee voluntarily resigned at a meeting on January 30. The email, written by Toni Davis a flautist for the Philharmonic, stated that "it was not possible to elect another group of people to carry on the work of the Society for a variety of reasons".

Members were also informed that the Society would be "inactive" for the next six months on February 12.

The email stated the Society was forced to make this decision for a variety of reasons. These included a lack of enough volunteers, a music librarian and membership secretary. The Society's auditor also confirmed that the organisation was in a weak financial state at the January meeting.

This week, Brian Northcott, one of four chosen to evaluate restarting the Society, announced that a new Executive Committee was ready to stand for election. The meeting has been tentatively scheduled for September 18 at the Cathedral Hall at 7.30 p.m.

He also said that the members of the committee were particularly pleased that the Bermuda Regiment Band had expressed interest in performing with the Society in the future. It is expected that the first concert will be in the spring of 2007.
