Commercial Cup provides goals galore
respective groups in the Commercial League Cup on Monday night at Somerset.
Both matches contained excitement and goals with Wheel beating Exiles 4-2 in a Group A encounter, three goals coming in each half. St. George's All-Stars needed to go to sudden death penalty kicks to get by North Village Rams in Group B after the teams were deadlocked at 3-3 after regulation time and then 4-4 after the first round of penalty kicks.
In the opening match Keith Bell led the Spinning Wheel scoring with a hat-trick from strikes in the 12th, 40th and 63rd minutes while Des Minors netted the fourth in the 70th to put the match out of Exiles' reach after they had replied with goals in the 13th and 59th minutes to keep it close at 1-1 and then 2-2.
St. George's took a 2-0 lead in the first half through Cal Rayner goals in the 24th and 33rd minutes only to see an own goal from Kenny Cann in the 46th and a strike from Eugene (Pickles) Smith in the 50th make it 2-2.
Four goals came during a frantic nine minute period early in the second half as Milton (Foods) Jones put St. George's up 3-2 in the 52nd minute only to see Ralph (Gumbo) Bean make it 3-3 after 55 minutes.
In the penalty kicks Cal Richardson, Eugene Crockwell and Kenny Pearman scored for St. George's in that order before Anthony Smith missed and Rayner scored.
The Rams missed their first penalty by Mike Levon before scoring their next four through Milgrove Romaine, Allan Smith, Leroy Wilson and Ralph Bean.
Sudden death penalties finally settled the thriller as Charles Wade missed for St. George's and then Cal Dill missed for Rams in the first round.
Stephen (Bish) Paynter kept his nerve to score for St. George's but Cornell Castle missed for the Rams.
Last night's Friendship Trophy and Shield Competition matches scheduled for BAA were called off because of torrential rain.
