Goal-happy Village hit six more

North Village hit St David's for another six at Bernard Park yesterday to take their total against the beleaguered east enders to 16 in two matches and maintain their position at the top of the Premier Division.

Damon Wade scored two -- one a cracking volley on the run from 12 yards -- while Dwight Warren's double made it five from two games for him against the bottom-of-the-table club.

Michael Hansey and second half substitute Sergio Goater got the others.

St David's must have feared the worst as Village scored their sixth with 23 minutes still remaining, but surprisingly it was the visitors, showing remarkable spirit despite their hopeless position, who did the remainder of the scoring, with Aaron Lugo despatching a brilliant individual effort and Lionel Cann striking from close range.

Village took the lead after some initial St David's pressure in the sixth minute as Dwight Warren's deep corner seemed to catch Michael Hansey in the face as he went up for the header and bobbled across the line.

The lead was doubled in the 19th minute when Tarik Jennings' cross from the right was powered home on the volley by Wade.

Worrell Bean went into referee Gregory Simons' notebook for a foul on Marlon Dill but it was his combative nature and no little measure of skill which helped keep St David's from being completely over-run.

However, he could do nothing about the Village third, in the 25th minute, as a neat ball was threaded through to Warren, who nipped in ahead of the goalkeeper to poke the ball home.

St David's almost replied immediately from the kick-off but the enterprising Chae Simmons was robbed of the ball as he lined up his shot.

Simmons' work-rate allowed him to set up Kevin Lambe, but he blasted over when well positioned.

And on the stroke of half-time Village made it four as St David's failed to clear a corner and the ball dropped for Hansey, who slipped it sideways to give Wade a simple tap-in.

Village had started the game without the injured Neil Robinson and Elliott Jennings, while Sergio Goater and Kentoine Jennings were left on the sidelines. St David's brought in George O'Brien in goal and Delano Hollis and Aaron Lugo to strengthen the defence.

Goater replaced Tarik Jennings at the interval and within ten minutes was on the scoresheet, rising higher than three defenders to head in a loose ball.

The nippy winger was instrumental in the sixth, 12 minutes later, working his way down the right flank, shrugging off the attentions of a defender and then chipping to the back post for Warren to deflect his header home.

Wade and Warren might both have had hat-tricks as O'Brien made impressive saves between the posts, but it was Lugo who brightened up the afternoon for the visitors with a fantastic goal seven minutes from time.

The defender broke away on the right touchline cut inside on an unstoppable run that took him past two defenders and then blasted a low left foot shot past Gladwin Edness who barely moved as the ball flashed in beside his near post.

Cann then scrambled home a corner to give the score some respectability.
