Senator Walton Brown has urged Government to "get moving" on its proposed Land Title Register.

The Government Senator told the Senate this week: "I'd like to ask the Ministry of Works and Engineering to get moving with the Land Registry.

"In the 1960s and 1970s there were many families who had their land taken from them by surreptitious means.

"The Land Registry will put everyone's name to their land and we will have an opportunity to get justice.

"There are many people who hold title deeds to property. This Land Registry will rectify an injustice that has been in place for decades."

The Land Title Registry was initiated in 2007. The Land Title Register aims to create a definitive record of ownership so it will no longer be necessary to undertake lengthy investigation of title each time a property is sold or mortgaged.

Government says it will also reduce disputes over ownership.

In this year's Budget Statement, Government said: "The Land Title Registry Office is now established and the coming year will see a range of activities to facilitate the Land Title Registry Office becoming fully operational, including the completion of the provisional registration of the Government estate and the preparation and implementation of legislation in order to facilitate the registration of private land."
