Odyssey to give boost to Island's night life

Bermuda is set to get a new night club at the end of this month when the Odyssey Night Club opens its doors at the Brunswick Building.

Public relations consultant Glenn Blakeney told The Royal Gazette yesterday that the new Front Street club was the idea of a group of individuals who operated under the name Troy Starr Limited.

"We want to provide Bermuda with first class entertainment and an alternative,'' said Mr. Blakeney.

"We are looking for mature clientele. They can be from 18 to 80 but must be conducive to a mature and intimate environment.

"We want people to feel they are in their home away from home when they visit the club.'' The full scale disco will feature "a very high tech presentation'' with "video walls and video screens''.

Both local and foreign vee and dee-jays will get the chance to show off their skills at the club, continued Mr. Blakeney. More appearances by overseas dee-jays will be considered if there is client demand for them.

It also hopes to "bring back live entertainment to a degree'' while emphasising good service, he added.

Mr. Blakeney said: "All the employees that we have screened and acquired have that special personality. We believe personality and good service go hand in hand so this will be a feature of all our bartenders and hosts.'' But due to the club's poor configuration, Odyssey will not be attracting large bands although it will feature track engagements featuring established recording artists without full accompaniment.

Depending on client support again, he continued, the club may reconfigure itself at a later date to allow for full accompaniment and better acoustics.

Mr. Blakeney said club organisers were aiming at one to two foreign artists per month plus local artists.

And he said local musician James Richardson was also putting together a trio for the club which would play every Sunday night and possibly others.

Sunday would also be a sports bar theme at the facility and beside satellite broadcasts of international events, local enthusiasts would be invited to bring in their own amateur sport videos for screening at the club with the best winning prizes.

Odyssey was focused on the theme idea, continued Mr. Blakeney, with Monday being "sink or swim night'' where patrons pay a cover charge and can drink stock liquor at no cost for the evening.

"Two for Tuesday'' was next with two for one drinks and back to back songs from recording artists while Wednesday was "Caribbean night'' featuring hot Latin rhythms and soca music.

Thursday will be "ladies night'' -- unless foreign acts were in town -- and Fridays and Saturdays will highlight the club's "party dance environment'', said Mr. Blakeney.

The club will feature memberships, a newsletter and a VIP lounge will be developed which will be open trio members on a select basis.

And Odyssey will also develop community events for the whole family with part proceeds going to charity, he added.

The club is slated to open at the end of this month with two major acts performing but Mr. Blakeney would not reveal who they were.
