Court fines man $2,200 for cannabis and false name charges
A Warwick man admitted to possessing cannabis and giving police a false name when he appeared in Magistrates' Court yesterday.
Kevin DeRoza, 43, of Random Lane, admitted to possessing 5.60 grams of cannabis in Paget on May 15.
The court heard DeRoza was searched in the early hours of May 15 when officers found a plantlike material in the left pocket of his shorts.
While being processed at the Hamilton Police Station he admitted he smoked weed.
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined him $1,200 for the offence and ordered him to pay by December 22.
DeRoza also gave officers a false name in a separate incident on November 10.
The court heard officers on North Shore Road in Devonshire were conducting stop and searches when they pulled over DeRoza's car.
They asked him for his personal details and he told them his name was Albert Wolffe and that he was 44-years-old. Police later learnt of his real identity.
In court DeRoza spoke in his defence and said: "I want to apologise. I am very remorseful for what I done and it will never happen again."
Mr Warner fined him an additional $1,000 for giving false details.
