Unfair treatment of teacher
April 8, 2011Dear Sir,I am highly angered by your exposure of Senor Lewis. It is unnecessary to be giving out the details of the situation. All the people of Bermuda need to know is that a teacher has been fired from BHS for exchanging inappropriate text messages with a student. Details of his private information are unnecessary. It is like gossip and last time I checked, The Royal Gazette was not a tabloid and I am afraid to say that it is on the road to becoming one. The Royal Gazette should take a page out of Bernews’ site, where they only gave the basic information about Mr Lewis, all that is needed to say.First of all, think about him and how he must feel being exposed to Bermuda as being a criminal when the investigation is ongoing. Second of all, if Mr. Lewis is charged with a crime of a sexual nature, then convention would prevent the publication of his name. After your article entitled ‘BHS teacher sacked over text messages to a pupil’ – the damage is done.Lastly, please spare a moment to think about his family, who must feel embarrassed about the situation enough, without all of Bermuda being led to jump to conclusions about their identified father and husband. It is humiliating. The worst thing is that the investigation is yet to be completed however you are exposing this man in a way that begs people to jump to conclusions. BHS took a precaution. The matter is being investigated. Next time, you should consider letting criminal investigations run their course. It’s a shame your newspaper would sensationalise the story to such a degree.15-YEAR-OLD BHS STUDENT
