Zane DeSilva named Minister without Portfolio
Zane DeSilva was yesterday sworn into Premier Ewart Brown's Cabinet as Minister without Portfolio. In a brief ceremony at Government House, Dr. Brown described Mr. DeSilva as an "Energiser Bunny" who bring hard work and commitment to his team.
The appointment brings Cabinet back up to 11 members following a summer of upheaval involving high-profile resignations and the death of Health Minister Nelson Bascome.
Mr. DeSilva a vocal supporter of the Premier who has often been outnumbered by Dr. Brown's backbench detractors in the past few months fills the role made vacant by Walter Roban's promotion to Health Minister two months ago.
"This means I guess I can be a little more specific in the work that we do for the people that I represent,"the new Minister told TheRoyal Gazette shortly after being sworn in.
He said a lot of work needs to be done to fulfil Dr. Brown's objectives in his final 12 months as Premier, saying of his own contribution:"I can help in any area. I have been around the block. I have been in constant touch with the people and I move in a lot of different circles."
Mr. DeSilva said of the Premier:"I totally support him.I think he's a great leader; I think he has a great vision.
"If you look at his track record, he's done more for Bermudian people than anyone. He continues to do so. I will continue to support him."
He listed FutureCare, day care and fast ferries as "huge accomplishments" by Dr. Brown.
Addressing the audience during the swearing-in ceremony, Mr. DeSilva said:"Wow. What can I say? I guess I will say: 'Premier, thank you for the endorsement.'
"All I wish to say is that in 2007 I was elected to serve my constituents and the people of Bermuda. I have done so as best I can and I will continue to do that as best I can.
"I look forward with huge enthusiasm to working with a great team."
Dr. Brown said:"The term 'self-made man' is exemplified by Zane DeSilva. If it doesn't fit Zane, then I don't know who it fits.
"From the time that I met him, I could feel his energies and commitment to Bermuda. I knew that if he came into the political arena that he would apply the same energy and reap the same benefits. Since his election in 2007, he's done exactly that."
