Victory not enough as Village fall short
With Dandy Town almost assured of winning the Premier Division title, North Village could only play and pray as they coasted to this emphatic victory at Bernard Park yesterday.
But once word came of Town's half-time 3-0 lead over Southampton Rangers, the Village fans had to be content with the win and second place in the table.
Assuring them of the runners-up spot were early substitute Keith Jennings, who scored twice in the first half, and Michael Hansey and Sergio Goater, who added one apiece.
Michael Lambe and McLee Smith replied for PHC on a day which marked Zebras skipper and goalkeeper Carlyle Crockwell's last appearance for the club. And he was given loud applause from the fans when he was substituted by Denis Joell after 60 minutes.
It was Smith's late goal after 83 minutes that made the score look emphatic, but by that time Village were well in command.
However, that trend hadn't been reflected earlier on as PHC scared the home side by taking a 1-0 lead.
After 13 minutes, Shawn Russell provided Lambe with a short free kick and with the Village defence unprepared, Lambe slipped through the middle to score from close range.
Village suffered a further setback shortly afterwards when goalkeeper Zane Hendrickson was injured and had to be substituted. Damon Wade, who had been playing up front, replaced him between the sticks.
Village slowly took the initiative, coming close after 24 minutes when Kofi Dill fired a 19-yard shot wide and Kimande Binns had Crockwell push his firm header over for a corner.
But Keith Jennings was to level the scores after 25 minutes, powerfully heading home Kevin Jennings' corner.
Then after 36 minutes, Hansey put Village ahead 2-1 when he converted a penalty after Damon Francis had handled in the box.
Village stormed ahead 3-1 after 40 minutes as a Kevin Jennings cross from the right was converted by Keith Jennings.
Goater got the fourth for Village after 59 minutes to enable his team to take a stranglehold, although PHC fought back and were rewarded for their determination when McLee Smith caught Village over-attacking and masterfully dribbled around left full back Randy Spence to score from close range.
Village finished off by forcing young substitute goalkeeper Dennis Joell to push a thunderous drive by Hansey over the bar.

Somerset 1 Dev.Cougars 2 Somerset dropped into the promotion/relegation play-off spot when they crashed 2-1 to Devonshire Cougars in front of their home fans yesterday.
And they had only themselves to blame as Trojans' Karl Roberts missed a first-half penalty.
Somerset now face Ireland Rangers to decide whether they play Premier League or First Division football next season.
Cougars led 2-0 at the break, Mark Smith latching onto a defensive error and firing a weak shot which went under the body of 'keeper Timmy Figuerido.
The second came from a sweetly struck 22-yard shot from Cory Goddard.
With five minutes to go to the interval, referee Anthony Mouchette awarded Somerset a penalty, but Roberts fluffed the opportunity.
They were awarded a second shortly after the restart and although Rodney Bascome slotted it home it was too little too late.
Wolves 1 Devonhire Colts 2 Devonshire Colts settled for a third place finish in the Premier Division with this hard fought victory over Wolves at Devonshire Rec. yesterday.
Although losing the contest, Wolves were able to gain some satisfaction by grabbing a Martonmere Cup place with their fifth place finish.
Wolves struck early, taking a 1-0 lead through Jared Peniston's goal after 27 minutes.
But Colts, realising they had a chance at the championship if Dandy Town and North Village were to lose, fought back hard and scored twice in the second half.
Clevon Hill levelled the scores after 47 minutes and Lloyd Holder came through to score the winner after 62 minutes.
