Breaking News: Report shows rise in obesity levels

A new report into the Island’s health system and reform released today shows the number of people who are obese or overweight has increased by seven percent.

In 2006, 64 percent of the population were classed as overweight or obese, compared to 57 percent in 1999.

The Bermuda Health Council unveiled the results of the Bermuda Health System Profile 2009 this afternoon.

A previous report was undertaken in 2005 but the new report includes economic indicators, mortality, morbidity and child mortality rates.

It will now form the basis for the BHeC’s recommendations to the Ministry of Health for policy directives.

Dr. Jennifer Attride-Stirling, CEO of the Bermuda Health Council, said: “This report provides vital information that is essential to develop evidence-based policy and recommendations to the Ministry of Health.

“It enables us to effectively and efficiently monitor the performance of our health system in a number of areas, to ensure the system continues to deliver high-quality services, while remaining sustainable.”

The report has used Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) methodology to measure the local health system to international standards.

It will also assist health insurance companies, the Bermuda Hospitals Board, physicians and other healthcare providers, in policies and decisions on care.

The report is available at: www.bhec.bm/resources/health_stats.html
