Kyme warms up for Games with victory in Guyana
Nick Kyme's Commonwealth Games aspirations were given a boost at the weekend when he took the Georgetown Open squash title in Guyana.
Competing against some of the Caribbean players he could face at the July Games in Manchester, England, Kyme saw off Charles Sonson of St. Lucia 4-9, 9-4, 9-1, 9-0 in the final.
That victory came after Kyme had knocked out number one seed Paul DeVerteuil of Trinidad and Tobago in the semi-finals (9-7, 9-2, 9-4).
Bermuda's director of squash Ross Triffitt said, putting the shaky start in the final to one side, it was an excellent result for the Islander so close to the Games.
"He had a lapse of concentration in the first game and, to quote him, he said he went on with a poor attitude and got punished and then turned things around to win," Triffitt said.
Triffitt said Kyme had been sent to the Open as part of his preparation for the Games.
"These tournaments have been constructed for Caribbean players, particularly the southern Caribbean players, to get experience before they head off to Manchester," he said.
Meanwhile, Triffitt said he was still waiting to hear whether Bermuda was sending two or three squash players to England.
Kyme, Tommy Sherratt and James Stout are all seeking to make the trip, but the Bermuda Olympic Association has yet to make a final decision.
"I believe it is still up in the air and we won't get a final decision for a couple of weeks," Triffitt said. "We are in a bit of a bind as to what is going on because we have now got James entered into the Junior Caribbean Championships in case he does not make the team."
That tournament takes place from July 20 in Jamaica, while the opening ceremony for the Games is on July 25.
