Rotating power cut lasts less than hour

The first rotating power outage since a devastating fire plunged the Island into darkness last week lasted for less than an hour yesterday.

The power outage started at 12.37 p.m. but less than an hour later at 1:23 p.m. Belco said electricity had been restored to all of its customers.

The outage took place after Belco was forced to shut down gas turbine engines shut down due to a mechanical failure.

Immediately after the mechanical failure, Belco's operation centre implemented rotating outages.

"At the time demand for electricity was approximately 106 Megawatts," it said.

This week Belco has been producing a steady supply of 113 Megawatts.

"The first customers to be affected were those on the Naval Annex circuit and three circuits in Somerset," Belco said. "In addition, the Admiralty, Harrington, Mullet Bay, Parson's Lane and Prospect circuits were affected.

It said work started immediately after the engine's shutdown to bring customers back online.

But Belco was confident no other outages were expected in the meantime.

The outage was planned to not last more than four hours.

However, Belco urged that should another rotating outage be required, a different group of neighbourhoods would be selected.

"Belco appreciates the co-operation of the public, as it works to restore full, reliable service to Bermuda," it said.
