Fahy swims to records
at the third Bermuda Amateur Swimming Association Spring Meet on Saturday.
Competing in his home pool for the first time this season, the 19-year-old Yale University student bettered his own record in the 200-metre individual medley by almost three seconds.
He also eclipsed Ian Raynor's six-year-old record in the 100m butterfly by 19 100ths of a second.
Fahy is one of four Island swimmers who have qualified for the Commonwealth Games.
The National Championships, June 12-14, will be the final opportunity locally for swimmers to achieve qualifying standards for the Games in Malaysia in September.
The event to watch will be the final of the 100m freestyle as the fastest local non-Commonwealth Games qualifier will gain the fourth and final place for a men's 4x100 relay team.
Ronald Cowen and Trevor Ferguson are the closest to making that fourth spot at the present time. Ferguson, who attends McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, also returned to Bermuda for the meet.
Meanwhile, Bermuda's younger swimmers continued to impress at the meet with several more reaching qualifying standards for the Caribbean Championships.
Making the grade were: Ashley Robinson, 12, in the 50m free, Kim Frith, 16, in the 200m breaststroke, Jessica Sousa, 15, in the 100m backstroke, Lyndsay Taylor, 16, in the 100 freestyle, Jonathan Herring, 14, in the 1500 freestyle and Tamika Williams, 19, in the 100m butterfly.
Achieving qualifying standards do not guarantee selection as only two swimmers can qualify for any individual event, so there will be plenty to swim for during the National Championships. And once again, officials will be flying in a couple of guest swimmers for the meet.
Complete results tomorrow OUT OF THE BLOCKS -- Swimmers begin a race during the third and final meet of the Spring Series on Saturday at BASA Pool. The meet was highlighted by two Stephen Fahy records.
