Both Paula Lewin and Peter Bromby were successful in their bids as each recorded vital victories while under intense pressure to produce the goods.

Bromby again showed his class, quickly seeing off the challenges of Canada and Barbados in his final two round-robin match-ups and then came from being 1-0 down to dispose of the United States 2-1 in one semifinal.

Meanwhile, Holmberg, having his choice of opponents had little difficulty downing the Canadians 2-0.

"Sweet revenge!'' exclaimed Bromby, who fell to the Americans two years ago when in a similar predicament. "We're in the final and going to Europe no matter what happens tomorrow ... all we need is a sponsor.

"It was certainly a good day for Bermuda where a nation of 55,000 was able to beat up on the mighty US, both men and women.'' The opening race saw Bromby fall behind at the start to the John Lovell-led team and could not make up the difference over the ensuing legs, losing by half a boatlength.

He came back with a vengeance though for the second, pinning a penalty on the American and leading throughout. A similar scenario -- except there was no penalty -- presented itself for the third race and Bromby could finally take solace in a job well done.

"We're going out there to beat (Holmberg) tomorrow (today),'' added Bromby.

"He's sailing well, but we're getting stronger and hopefully can get the jump on him.'' With the top two finishers in the men's section qualifying for the finals set for Holland next month, Bromby has his spot booked regardless of the outcome of the best-of-three final against Holmberg.

However, Lewin needs to turn the tables on the Canadians if she is to join Bromby during the next mission.

Lewin squeezed into the final on the tails of a win and a loss as the women completed their second round-robin series.

After falling to the team from Canada for the second day in succession Lewin and her three-member group regrouped to defeat the United States' Dawn Riley, assuring them a berth in today's best-of-three match race series.

Racing in the J24 design craft, Bermuda finished with a 2-2 record compared to 4-0 for Canada, while the host nation failed to record a victory.

The winds, which had been noticeably light throughout the week, increased to the 9-12 knot range, but temperatures remained in the high 90s.
