Laugh it up with strictly matrimony

her, should come and see this show!'' This is the advice of Ms. Patricia Pogson, director of the Circuit Theatre Players' latest production, Strictly Matrimony, which opens at City Hall on Thursday evening.

The comedy by Trinidadian playwright Errol Hill, is guaranteed to keep the audience laughing -- as it did each Thursday evening throughout the month of June when the Players staged a special performance of the play for guests at Belmont Hotel and Golf Club.

"Unfortunately, although the play was very popular, we had financial difficulties in the area of promotion, and the show had to end. So we decided to bring it to City Hall, where we hope to capture a wider audience,'' says Ms. Pogson.

"The play is set on an island -- not Bermuda -- in a society that does not condone the practice of living together. Bella and Manny are the couple who have been doing just that, quite happily for the past six years, when Bella's brother makes his presence felt. He is named Slick, an appropriate name for him, since he is a thief and a con artist. When he gets involved with a church-oriented women's protective organisation, he convinces Bella that she should get married. The plot of the play centres around the outcome of these deliberations,'' says Ms. Pogson.

Appearing in the role of Bella is Denise Whitter, who is a legal secretary at Conyers, Dill & Pearman and Sandys Secondary drama teacher Rotimi Martins takes on the role of Manny. He is also the producer of the play.

The Royal Gazette employee Kevin Bean plays Slick, with well-known actor Danjou Anderson, who works for Heritage House, in the role of Rev. Shrimp.

Ginea Edwards, a fine arts student at Bermuda College, rounds out the cast as Lady Polly Love-Muggins.

Patricia Pogson, who teaches drama at St. George's Secondary School, was also the director of Ain't Misbehavin', the musical tribute to Fats Waller which received rave reviews when it was produced at City Hall in June. Both Denise Whitter and Danjou Anderson appeared in that production.

Strictly Matrimony runs at City Hall from Thursday, September 10 through Saturday, September 12, at 8.30 p.m.

Tickets at $12 may be obtained from cast members, from the City Hall Box Office between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. or at the door.
