ISL on brink of signing TV deal
David Bascome, comissioner of the Island Soccer League (ISL), has confirmed that the league is in talks with an international television company.
Rumours have been swirling around the Island in recent weeks that a major announcement is imminent with many believing that the league is on the verge of being televised across the world.
And while Bascome has confirmed that he is in talks with a 'major media outlet', he also insisted that any decision was at least two weeks away.
Any television exposure for the ISL would be a major coup for Bascome, and put his league, in some respects, ahead of the Bermuda Hogges, the Island's only semi-professional football team, who currently have no television time.
"We have been in talks with a television company, a major media outlet, we're still talking, but I expect to be able to make an announcement in two weeks' time," said Bascome.
"I've heard the rumours and wanted to clarify the league's position. If it happens it will mean tremendous exposure for the league, the players, the coaches and the whole of Bermuda."
The deal, should it occur, is believed to centre around this year's All-Star game in July. A two-hour programme would be aired this year, with the deal then building in the following seasons to eventually have one game being shown each week.
"When we started the league we said we wanted to have TV involved within three years. This will be great for the league, and will allow us to put Bermuda's players in the spotlight at home and abroad."
Meanwhile, CellularOne have signed on as division sponsor of the ISL. As part of their sponsorship, the company will provide the ISL with a financial and product donation valued at $50,000. The sponsorship funds will be used to manage the event and the merchandise will include cell phones, Personal Digital Assistance devices (PDAs) for the committee and coaches, as well as voice and data service.
Bascome said: "I would like to thank CellularOne for once again supporting the ISL. I would certainly not be able to run a league such as this without the generous support from CellularOne.
