Bay pair put paid to Police

Bailey's Bay 139-4 Bailey's Bay had an easier than expected win over Police at Police Field as seamer Clarkie Trott and young spinner Stephen Outerbridge claimed nine of the wickets between them to restrict their hosts to 134 in 33.5 overs.

Police never recovered from the loss of Barry Richards in the third over, trapped lbw by Trott for the first of his five victims. Further wickets went down in the seventh, eighth and 11th overs as Police found themselves in trouble at 37-4 with Trott taking three of the four.

Ferdinand Thorne (19) and Peter Philpott (seven) steadied things in the next nine overs with a stand of 30 for the fifth wicket. But wickets fell regularly again after that as Thorne, Terry Thomas and Freston Hurdle departed in the 23rd, 27th and 28th overs to make it 101-8.

Daniel Reece helped wag the tail with a stubborn 30 not out while Richard Austin scored 17 in the stand of 32 for the ninth wicket with Reece.

Trott finished with five for 34 from 10 overs while teenager Outerbridge, who took four for 29 against Willow Cuts last weekend, had another four wicket haul with his four for 35 off 8.5 overs.

Shane Burgess and Roger Trott were hardly missed in the batting as Bay comfortably reached their target in 26.2 overs. After Ricky Hill, Coolridge Durham and Glenn Blakeney laid the foundation for the win, another youngster, 15-year-old Jim West, wrapped up Bay's second straight Overs win with a straight driven six off Richard Austin to finish with 21 not out.

Openers Hill and Durham both scored 25 while Blakeney smashed 51, including eight fours and a six during a stand of 83 with Durham for the second wicket.

Hurdle, Philpott, Thorne and Austin all took one wicket.

Warwick 151-8 St. George's 152-5 Captain Clay Smith failed for the first time in six innings, but he left it to new opener Mark (Beaver) Ray to see the team through to yet another early season victory.

Smith, with five straight half-centuries, was third out on 65, caught for seven in the slips by Stevie Lightbourne after driving at a delivery from spinner Reginald (Lucky) Pitcher. Ray was already at the other end and he carried his bat through to the end with a mature 57 not out with six boundaries in just over two hours.

Lionel Cann, who Ray replaced as opener, stroked 32 at number five while Ricky Hodsoll was not out on 14. Pitcher claimed two for 26 from his 10 overs while Ritchie Foggo took two for 26 off 5.3 overs.

Foggo did much better with the ball than he did with the bat, as, in front of his former home crowd, he was out first ball when he lofted a catch to Ray on the boundary.

Warwick always found runs hard to come by. After 20 overs they had just 68 on the board while just eight came off the next 10 overs.

Daniel Caines was the high man for Warwick with 37, sharing in an opening stand of 40 with Trent Simmons (28). Pitcher contributed 22 in the middle order.

Eugene Foggo claimed three for 18 from 10 overs with four maidens while Clay Smith conceded just 15 in his 10 overs which included three maidens.

Devonshire 153 Willow Cuts 156-7 Willow Cuts picked up their first win as captain Dexter Basden led them to their winning target of 154 at Somerset.

Basden scored 39 as he and his uncle, Kevin Fubler (27), put on 58 for the second wicket to take the score from 15 to 73. When Basden departed on 102, younger brother Richard Basden and another uncle, Rodney Fubler, kept them in sight of victory. Basden hit 21 and Fubler 20 not out.

After Richard Basden departed, Cuts lost three more wickets in the space of 16 runs as Winston Trott Jr came back for a second spell and picked up two more wickets to finish with three for 26 off seven overs. Alfred Carter took two for 25.

Earlier, Dexter Smith hit 59, including nine fours and a six, as he dominated an opening stand of 46 with Alfred Carter who contributed just three. But there was little support from the other batsmen as four in the top six failed to reach double figures before Leon Place contributed 25.

Ossie Hinds, Kevin Fubler and Richard Basden all took two wickets for Willow Cuts.

St. David's 143-7 Western Stars 145-6 A week after falling to a 136-run loss to St. George's, Western Stars had to sweat it out in this match against a spirited, young St. David's side at St.

John's Field.

Thanks to lower-order batsmen Anthony Manders and Gary Brangman the champions were able to score a four-wicket victory with Manders undefeated on 27 and Brangman not out on 23.

Stars made to struggle From Page 23 The pair rescued Stars when they were reeling at 95 for six, putting on 50 runs during their triumphant seventh-wicket stand.

That partnership followed an earlier rescue act when Stars were floundering at 52 for five before their top batsman, opener Treadwell Gibbons (57), and Manders put on 43 for the sixth-wicket.

At that stage St. David's had captured the valuable wickets of batting stalwarts such as Albert Steede (3), Cleon Scotland (4), Ricky Brangman (12), skipper Arnold Manders (1) and Hasan Durham (0).

Del Hollis led the St. David's bowling attack two for 12 off eight overs, including a maiden while Kameron Fox had two for 23 off 10 overs with two maidens.

Graham Fox helped St. David's to a respectable score with a patient 46 but with most of the other batsmen tied down by some steady bowling the east enders eventually ran out of overs. Young Shannon Raynor was the next top scorer with 27 while Del Hollis made 14.

Hasan Durham led the Stars bowling with five for 27 off 10 overs, one of which was a maiden.
