The East End entertainment scene is soon set to be spiced-up with a healthy dose of Latin rhythms.

For Bermuda's newest night spot, Azure, will offer locals and visitors alike the chance to rumba, samba and salsa into the early hours of the morning.

Situated in the former US Military Base's Officer's Club, Azure is currently being renovated from a military club into an upscale nightclub/entertainment complex.

Under the direction of legendary entertainers Kathy and Kenny Bean, the 16,500 square foot complex will be home to the Island's biggest dance floor and will also house a VIP lounge and separate, smaller nightclub.

"The `Ball Room' will offer banquet seating, waiter service and a large stage for live musical entertainment, dance and theatrical performances and comedy shows,'' explained public relations manager Sonia Perez Bean.

"The ballroom will have the biggest dance floor in Bermuda.'' Ms Perez Bean added that the ballroom with its spectacular ocean views and seating for 600 was perfect for weddings, conventions or other special events.

And she said that anyone looking to host large receptions should keep in mind that the Ballroom can accommodate more than 1,000 standing guests.

"Another part of the club will have the `Galaxy Room' which will have its own private entrance, dance floor and DJ spinning the finest in R&B, soca, reggae and dance house,'' she said.

"And we will have a VIP room for celebrities, which will be separate from the Ballroom and the Galaxy Room.'' Ms Perez Bean said several factors prompted the move to establish "the only international entertainment forum in Bermuda''.

"First there was Kenny's experience in the nightclub business and as an entrepreneur in general,'' she explained.

"Tourism is not up to par and it is not what it use to be. Hopefully this will help boost it.

"And Bermudians are starving for a place where they can let their hair down -- somewhere different. Most people love Latin music, it's a very passionate experience.'' Ms Perez Bean also said that the club's location, at the East End of the Island, was a win-win situation for all involved.

"I believe that in the next few years, Southside in St. David's will be hot property,'' she said. "This was the perfect time to get in there.

"And we're happy that St. George's will be our neighbours. We will see any visitors to the club about the town and send them down there for a visit.

Hopefully we can work together.'' Entertainment won't be the only component to Azure. Ms Perez Bean said the club will also host dance workshops and fitness classes entitled `Keep Fit Goes Latin'.

"It's a great way to stay in shape, de-stress and meet vibrant energetic people,'' she said.

"`Keep Fit Goes Latin' will introduce Mambo, Salsa, Cha Cha and Meringue with a combination of cardio-vascular exercise and simple dance routines.'' True to its name, Ms Perez Bean hinted that the interior of the new club, once completed, will be based on a blue theme.

"Azure means blue which is the colour of the Millennium, but it's also the colour of the waters of Bermuda,'' she pointed out.

"The wall treatment is terrific, it was imported from Japan. It has gold speckles in it so when the lights hits it, it reflects.'' The club, which is scheduled to open in May, will be open seven nights a week from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. and will have plenty of free parking.
