Wily campaigner faces the young pretender

It will be a case of the wily campaigner against the young pretender when squash's national championships reach their climax tonight.

For a long time the man to beat, 30-year-old Gary Plumstead will take on US collegiate star Nick Kyme (22) at the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association's Devonshire Courts after they saw off James Stout and Tommy Sherratt respectively in the semifinals.

Kyme, who represented Bermuda at the Commonwealth Games, is the No.1 seed in the tournament, with Plumstead seeded No.3.

The former beat Sherratt 3-0 (15-12, 15-11, 15-10) despite a gallant effort, Kyme's consistency winning the day.

Plumstead, meanwhile, won his match-up with Stout in convincing fashion 3-0 (15-10, 15-5, 15-13).

"Nick, being seeded No.1, was favourite to get to the final," said Ross Triffitt, Bermuda's director of squash. "It was really just a question of what side of the draw Gary would end up on. He ended up on James' side and that prevented him from making the final."

Triffitt said the odds favoured the older man going into the end game.

"Gary is probably still favourite to beat Nick, but I think it is going to be very interesting," he said. "For the first time, Nick is coming into a match a lot better prepared. He has just finished the inter collegiate championships and the college season. He has had a short break and hopefully he will be very fresh and ready to try and match it with Gary."
